Position Purpose

The Assistant Meat Manager supports the Meat Manager in overseeing the daily operations of the Meat Department. This position helps ensure exceptional product quality, food safety compliance, inventory accuracy, merchandising execution, and customer service excellence. The Assistant Meat Manager plays a key role in associate development, operational efficiency, and achieving department sales and profitability goals.

Key Responsibilities Department Operations
  • Assist in managing daily Meat Department operations.
  • Ensure meat, poultry, seafood, and value-added products are properly stocked, rotated, and merchandised.
  • Maintain department standards for cleanliness, organization, and product presentation.
  • Support inventory management activities, including ordering, receiving, and product rotation.
  • Monitor department conditions and take corrective action to maintain operational excellence.
Customer Service
  • Deliver outstanding customer service and promote a customer-focused culture.
  • Assist customers with product selection, preparation recommendations, and special requests.
  • Address customer concerns promptly and professionally.
  • Ensure product quality and freshness meet customer expectations.
  • Promote a positive shopping experience that encourages customer loyalty.
Team Leadership
  • Assist with training, coaching, and developing department associates.
  • Provide daily direction and support to team members.
  • Help ensure associates understand and follow company policies and procedures.
  • Foster teamwork, accountability, and a positive work environment.
  • Lead department operations in the Meat Manager’s absence.
Sales and Financial Performance
  • Support achievement of department sales, labor, shrink, and profitability goals.
  • Monitor key performance indicators and assist with action plans to improve results.
  • Help manage labor scheduling and productivity.
  • Assist with merchandising programs, promotions, and seasonal displays.
  • Support inventory control efforts to minimize shrink and maximize profitability.
Food Safety and Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with food safety, sanitation, and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor proper product handling, storage, temperature controls, and rotation practices.
  • Ensure accurate pricing, labeling, and signage throughout the department.
  • Maintain a safe environment for associates and customers.
  • Assist with department audits, inspections, and corrective actions.
Qualifications Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous grocery, retail, or meat department experience.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred
  • Previous supervisory, lead, or department leadership experience.
  • Knowledge of meat merchandising, cutting standards, and inventory management.
  • Experience managing department performance metrics.
  • Food safety certification or related training.

  • Work in refrigerated and cold storage environments.
  • Safely operate department equipment and tools.
Working Conditions
  • Fast-paced retail grocery environment.
  • Frequent exposure to refrigerated work areas and meat processing equipment.
  • Ongoing interaction with customers, associates, and vendors.
  • Flexible scheduling including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
