BIM Modeler Rail
We are seeking an experienced BIM Modeller with a strong background in rail infrastructure to produce and maintain high-quality, federated 3D models developed to LOD 350. The successful candidate will create discipline models in which elements are graphically represented as specific systems - with accurate quantity, size, shape, location, orientation, and defined interfaces and connections to adjacent systems - enabling reliable coordination, clash detection, and downstream construction use.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain rail discipline models (trackwork, alignments, earthworks, drainage, structures, stations, platforms, OCS/catenary, signalling and systems routing) to LOD 350, with modelled interfaces between systems suitable for clash detection and coordination.
- Translate design inputs - alignments, survey data, 2D drawings, engineering sketches and specifications - into accurate, data-rich 3D models.
- Apply project BIM standards, the BIM Execution Plan (BEP), naming conventions, and agreed Levels of Development / Information per the model progression schedule.
- Embed and manage object parameters and attribute data so models are usable for quantity take-off, scheduling, and asset information requirements.
- Participate in federated model coordination and clash-detection sessions; identify, log, and resolve clashes between disciplines.
- Maintain model integrity, version control, and revision history within the Common Data Environment (CDE).
- Produce model-derived outputs: plans, sections, schedules, quantities, and visualisations.
- Liaise with engineers, designers, BIM Coordinators, and other disciplines to ensure design intent is accurately captured.
- Support QA/QC checks on models and contributes to continuous improvement of modelling workflows and content libraries.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering, Architecture, Construction, Geomatics, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
- Demonstrable experience as a BIM Modeller on rail or transport / linear infrastructure projects.
- Proven track record delivering models to LOD 350, including modelled system interfaces and connections (not just standalone geometry).
- Solid understanding of BIM concepts: LOD/LOI, model federation, clash detection, and the ISO 19650 information-management workflow.
- Strong knowledge of rail-specific elements: track geometry and alignments, turnouts/switches, ballast and sleepers, platforms, overhead line equipment, and corridor/structure interfaces.
- Ability to read and interpret civil and structural engineering drawings and specifications.
- Attention to detail, strong spatial awareness, and good coordination/communication skills.
Software Proficiency
- Autodesk: Revit, Civil 3D, InfraWorks, Navisworks (clash detection / coordination)
- Bentley: OpenRail Designer, MicroStation, ProStructures / OpenBuildings (advantageous for rail projects)
- Familiarity with a Common Data Environment (e.g., BIM 360 / ACC, ProjectWise, or equivalent)
- Point-cloud / survey data handling is an advantage
Preferred / Desirable
- Experience across multiple LODs and understanding of model progression from LOD 200 → 350 → 400.
- Exposure to 4D (sequencing) or 5D (cost) workflows.
- Knowledge of relevant rail standards and authority requirements applicable to your region.
- Experience producing or maintaining BIM content / family libraries.
- ISO 19650 awareness or certification.
What Success Looks Like
Clean, coordinated, standards-compliant rail models delivered to LOD 350 on schedule, with minimal unresolved clashes, reliable embedded data, and outputs that the wider project team and downstream stakeholders can use with confidence.
