Cloud Solution Architect
About the role
FIS is the technology team behind the Freightways Group, running the systems that keep express freight, business mail, and information management moving across New Zealand.
We're looking for a Cloud Solution Architect to join our team. You'll design end-to-end solutions on AWS while staying close to the code, comfortable in a .NET codebase to understand how things really work. This isn't enterprise architecture; your designs should be grounded in real system behaviour.
You'll work with Product Managers, Product Owners, delivery teams, and business colleagues to turn product goals into buildable solutions. Expect to read and trace code, untangle legacy behaviour, and use AI tools to move faster.
What You'll Be Doing
- Dig into existing code to understand how things really work.
- Use AI tools to explore unfamiliar code and sharpen your designs, knowing where they help and where they don't.
- Weigh up risks and trade-offs, factoring in resilience, security, and cost.
- Learn each domain deeply and stay close to the business.
- Design end-to-end AWS solutions across application, integration, security, and operations, through to delivery.
- Grow a future-state architecture and long-term roadmap with the Architecture Group.
- Pair with developers on tricky problems and get teammates unblocked.
- Contribute to Agile refinement and planning to keep a healthy architectural runway.
- Capture designs and key decisions the team can lean on later.
- Review designs and code as a supportive peer.
- Partner with business stakeholders to understand their needs, translate them into practical technology solutions, and communicate complex technical concepts in a clear, accessible way for non-technical audiences.
Is This You?
If you don't tick every box but this feels like your role, please apply anyway.
- 5+ years in technical software roles (or equivalent depth), with a curiosity that pulls you into the code.
- Around 2+ years in solution or application architecture while staying close to the code.
- Strong skills in a modern programming language, enough to read and reason about real systems. Preferably .NET / .NET Core.
- Hands-on experience designing solutions on AWS.
- Solid understanding of microservices, event-driven architecture, and RESTful APIs.
- Working knowledge of cloud security, resilience, and business continuity.
- Pragmatism to work across modern and legacy systems, understanding them before changing them.
- Enthusiasm for AI-assisted development tools.
- Comfort moving across a broad range of domains.
- AWS certification welcome, but not essential.
How You Like to Work
- Curious by nature.
- A clear communicator who makes complex tech approachable.
- Kind, collaborative, and values every team member's contribution across developers, testers, product managers, product owners, and business colleagues.
- A believer in simplicity, maintainability, and sustainable progress.
- You take quiet ownership of the solutions you shape, balancing long-term architecture with day-to-day delivery.
Why You'll Love It Here
- Stay close to the code while growing your architectural influence.
- A broad, evolving domain landscape that keeps you learning.
- Meaningful products and platforms that support critical Freightways operations.
- Cloud-native and API-centric approaches.
- Collaboration over hierarchy.
- Hybrid working that respects your life outside work.
- Ongoing support for your learning and growth.
Everyone's welcome here
We're committed to a diverse, inclusive team, and we welcome applicants of all backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, genders, and abilities. Different perspectives make our work and our team stronger. You'll need the right to work in New Zealand.
