Job Summary

New Balance is seeking a skilled and motivated Data Engineer to join the Global Direct-to-Consumer Technology organization. This role serves as the technical leader for DTC data engineering, governance, and analytics enablement.

DTC operates in a fast-paced, product-oriented environment, and success in this role requires a willingness to wear many hats. The successful candidate will serve as a data architect, data engineer, consultant, and steward of DTC data practices. While responsible for establishing architectural standards and long-term strategic direction, this individual is also expected to remain hands-on, directly building and supporting data pipelines, models, integrations, and data products. Partnering closely with Enterprise Data and Data Platform teams, the Data Engineer will help establish and mature the DTC data practice from the ground up, creating the foundations, standards, and shared data capabilities that enable teams across DTC to leverage data as a strategic asset.

Major Accountabilities

Data Engineering & Solution Delivery

  • Design, build, and support scalable data pipelines, integrations, and data products across DTC systems and platforms in partnership with Enterprise Data and Digital Product teams.
  • Develop and maintain data models, transformation processes, and curated datasets that support operational and analytical use cases.
  • Implement standards for data reliability, observability, monitoring, testing, and operational support.
  • Implement solutions for ingesting, processing, and delivering data from ecommerce, retail, marketing, customer, and operational systems.
  • Troubleshoot data quality, integration, performance, and reliability challenges.

Business Partnership & Data Stewardship

  • Work directly with business stakeholders, Product Managers, Architects, Engineers, and Analysts to identify opportunities to improve business outcomes through data.
  • Translate business objectives and questions into actionable data products, measurement strategies, and analytics capabilities.
  • Champion responsible data usage, governance, privacy, and compliance practices throughout the organization.
  • Foster a culture of data-driven decision making through trusted, accessible, and well-governed data assets.
  • Help establish and grow the DTC data practice by implementing standards, processes, and capabilities that scale across teams.

Data Architecture & Strategy

  • Define and evolve the DTC data architecture vision, principles, standards, and roadmap.
  • Establish canonical data models and integration patterns for customer, product, order, inventory, and engagement data.
  • Partner with Enterprise Data, Data Platform, Security, and Engineering teams to ensure alignment with broader organizational standards and capabilities.
  • Understand best practices for data governance, lineage, quality, privacy, retention, and security.
  • Evaluate and recommend data platforms, tools, vendors, and emerging technologies that support DTC business objectives.

Requirements for Success

  • Proven experience designing, building, and supporting scalable data pipelines, integrations, and data products with modern cloud-based data platforms and data warehouses, including Snowflake and Azure data technologies.
  • Proficiency in SQL and at least one modern programming language commonly used for data engineering.
  • Expertise designing and delivering self-service analytics capabilities that empower business teams to make data-driven decisions.
  • Experience developing dashboards, reports, and data visualizations using Power BI.
  • Experience leveraging AI-assisted development tools, including GitHub Copilot and similar technologies, to improve productivity, code quality, and solution delivery.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence technical direction and guide cross-functional teams without direct authority.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate technical concepts into business outcomes.
  • Experience working within Agile delivery teams and collaborating with Product Managers, Architects, Engineers, Analysts, and business stakeholders.
  • Ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-starter mindset with ability to operate with minimal direction at times.
  • Experience in data architecture, data engineering, analytics engineering, or related disciplines.
  • Proven experience designing enterprise-scale data architectures, data models, and integration patterns which align with business objectives.
  • Experience with data governance, data quality, metadata, lineage, and stewardship practices.
  • Experience partnering with business and technology stakeholders to define and execute the data strategy.
