Job Description:

Title: Development Manager

Reports to: CEO

Compensation: $75,000 - $90,000/year

Location: Hybrid - San Francisco Bay Area. Can work remotely but will be required to attend occasional meetings in the BACR office or other locations. Some travel may be required, but it is not expected to be significant.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordination & Accountability: Maintain a stewardship calendar of grant application and reporting deadlines, donor touchpoints, campaigns, and events, and ensure the CEO and Executive Directors stay ahead of deadlines

    • Track fundraising commitments and next steps across leadership, providing timely reminders and progress check-ins to keep all development activity on schedule

    • Schedule and coordinate donor, funder, and prospect meetings on behalf of the CEO and Executive Directors

  • Meeting Preparation & Follow-Up: Prepare agendas, briefing materials, and funder research summaries in advance of meetings; capture notes and action items; and draft and send follow-up correspondence to ensure commitments are honored

  • Grants & Reporting Support: Support outreach and draft grant proposals, letters of inquiry, applications, and funder reports in collaboration with the CEO, Executive Directors, and finance staff

    • Support outreach to funder prospects by drafting emails and other communications for the CEO, Executive Directors, and other staff

    • Where appropriate, maintain direct communications with prospects to secure fundraising meetings and steward funder relationships

    • Develop and maintain a library of boilerplate language, program descriptions, budgets, and standard attachments to streamline proposal development

    • Collaborate with the Contracts team on tracking foundation, government, and corporate grants at all stages, from prospect research through application, award, reporting, and renewal

  • Development narrative: Help to shape the org-wide narrative on fundraising (“the system behind the safety net”), work with CEO and Executive Directors to help shape specific investment opportunities, and lead efforts to find relevant data and citations (internally and externally) to support the above.

  • Donor Database & Records: Develop and maintain the Salesforce donor database, including accurate and timely entry of gifts, contacts, and actions; generate acknowledgment letters; and produce pipeline and revenue reports for leadership

  • Development Initiatives: Play a key coordinating role for potential future initiatives including individual donor, major gifts, grassroots support, and/or planned giving efforts

  • Culture of Philanthropy: Serve as an internal resource and champion, helping program staff across the organization understand and embrace their role in fundraising

  • Other Duties: As assigned by the CEO

Qualifications & Experience

  • Exceptional organizational and project management skills, with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple competing workstreams, prioritize, and meet deadlines

  • High level of attention to detail and follow-through; comfortable serving as the person who keeps others on track, including a proven ability to manage up across multiple personality and leadership styles

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills effective with a diverse range of audiences, including executives, program staff, donors, and institutional funders

  • Knowledge of grants management, funder research, proposal development, and reporting

  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and exercise sound judgment

  • Self-motivated, service-oriented, and able to work both independently and as part of a team

  • Ability to convey a high degree of commitment and passion for BACR’s mission

Requirements

  • One to three years of experience in nonprofit development, development operations, or project coordination, including grant writing, proposal development, and funder reporting experience

  • Proficiency with donor databases/CRM systems (especially Salesforce), Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace

  • Experience with AI tools (especially as applied to nonprofit fundraising) a plus
