Full-Stack Software Developer

Salary: $90,000 – $125,000 per year

Build software used around the world

Datanest was founded in Christchurch with a simple goal: to make environmental and engineering data easier to collect, manage, understand and deliver.

Today, our software is a data aggregation platform used by organisations across New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and currently expanding in the United States. We are growing quickly, expanding our products and investing heavily in the next generation of the Datanest platform.

We are now looking for an experienced Full-Stack Software Developer to join our Christchurch team.

This is an opportunity to do more than simply work through a list of development tasks. You will have genuine influence over how our products evolve, help shape technical decisions and take ownership of meaningful parts of a platform used by professionals around the world.

We are still small enough that everyone has a voice, but established enough that the software you build will be used by real customers solving real problems every day.

Why join Datanest?

Datanest is at an exciting stage of growth.

We are moving beyond our early startup phase and building the team, systems and technical foundations needed to support a rapidly growing global SaaS platform.

That means there is plenty to build.

We are rapidly developing new functionality across field data collection, laboratory data management, GIS, mapping, automated reporting, dashboards and AI-assisted workflows.

At the same time, we are investing in improving the architecture of our existing platform, reducing technical debt, strengthening performance and building software that can scale for years to come.

You will not be Developer #200 in a large organisation.

You will work closely with our founders, product team, customers and other developers. Your ideas will be heard, your decisions will matter and you will be able to see the direct impact of your work.

Good ideas do not disappear into layers of management. They become features our customers use.

What can we offer?

We know how much time people spend at work, so we want to create an environment that is productive, enjoyable and built around a team that genuinely works well together.

We offer:

  • The opportunity to help shape a global software platform from Christchurch.

  • Genuine ownership of products, features and technical decisions.

  • Direct access to the people using the software you build.

  • A collaborative and agile development environment.

  • The ability to see your work reach customers quickly.

  • A competitive remuneration package based on skills and experience.

  • Opportunities to grow your responsibilities as Datanest continues to expand.

  • A company culture that celebrates team success and values practical ideas over hierarchy.

While technical capability is important, attitude, communication and being a strong fit for the team matter just as much to us.

What will you be working on?

You will work across both new product development and the continued improvement of the existing Datanest platform.

Depending on your experience and interests, your work may include:

  • Developing new functionality across the Datanest platform.

  • Improving existing products, architecture and system performance.

  • Helping reduce technical debt and strengthen long-term maintainability.

  • Building tools for field data collection, laboratory results, mapping, GIS, dashboards and automated reporting.

  • Working with spatial datasets and web-based mapping functionality.

  • Developing database integrations, interfaces and APIs.

  • Translating product ideas and customer problems into practical software solutions.

  • Implementing thoughtful UI and UX designs.

  • Supporting testing and the deployment of new features.

  • Participating in code reviews and helping improve development standards.

  • Contributing to technical and product decisions.

  • Taking ownership of features from initial idea through to customer release.

We release regularly, so you will see your work move from development into the hands of customers without waiting through long corporate release cycles.

Who would make a great addition to our team?

We are looking for someone who is self-motivated, comfortable managing their own workload and willing to contribute ideas rather than simply wait for instructions.

You will enjoy understanding the problem behind a feature, not just implementing a specification.

You will have strong communication skills, a practical approach to problem-solving and the confidence to work collaboratively with both technical and non-technical team members.

The ideal candidate will have commercial full-stack development experience and be confident working across both front-end and back-end systems.

Experience with the following would be valuable:

  • Laravel (PHP) & Golang (or willing to learn)

  • Vue.js & Typescript

  • APIs and database integrations

  • PostgreSQL / PostGIS or equivalent relational DB experience writing performant SQL

  • Take great care and consideration for user experience, security, performance, and have strong front-end engineering quality

  • Git / Github / Gitflow workflow

  • Agile or Scrum development environments

  • AWS, DevOps, IaC, CI/CD or system automation

Qualifications and experience

Ideally, you will have:

  • Five or more years of commercial full-stack web-development experience.

  • Strong experience with JavaScript, TypeScript, Golang and PHP, or an equivalent development stack.

  • Experience building and maintaining modern SaaS applications.

  • A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field, or equivalent commercial experience.

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

  • The ability to organise, prioritise and manage multiple pieces of work.

  • Excellent attention to detail.

  • Fluent written and spoken English.

Please do not be discouraged from applying if you do not meet every preferred requirement.

A strong attitude, a willingness to learn and the ability to contribute positively to the team are equally important to us.

Location and working rights

This role is based in our Christchurch office.

We believe in-person collaboration is important for communication, product development and maintaining the team culture we have worked hard to build.

Applicants must:

  • Be based in Christchurch or be willing to relocate to Christchurch before starting.

  • Be available to work from our Christchurch office.

  • Have fluent written and spoken English.

  • Have full legal working rights in New Zealand, including a current visa permitting full-time work.

This is not a remote-working position, and applications seeking remote work will not be considered.

Make your mark

We are looking for someone who wants to build more than individual features. This is a chance to join a New Zealand-founded company at a defining stage of its growth, help shape the direction of the platform and take ownership of software used by organisations around the world. In years to come, we want you to be able to look at Datanest and say:

“I helped build that.”
