Intermediate DevOps - Live & Work in Uganda

Location: Kampala,Central Region,Uganda

Ensibuuko is building mobile banking software in Uganda and throughout Africa.

Frontier Foundry, Ed Levinson, and other Canadian investors have been supporting the company for over a year.

We've sent three people from Vancouver to live & work in Uganda since January 2017. As some of the team comes back to Canada, we're looking to send a new crew to help build the product and help build capacity around software development best practices with the local team.

For this role, we are looking at running servers in multiple countries, and configuring secure deployments and remote maintenance strategies. This may require travel to other countries in Africa for short periods.

What We're Looking For

You're a developer with intermediate sysadmin / devops skills

You would like to live and work in Kampala, Uganda for 3+ months. You've traveled or worked remotely before, or otherwise have had experience with other cultures.

You have experience with modern PHP frameworks and the LAMP stack.

You are comfortable with Linux system administration

You are comfortable working with real hardware and colos. You're willing to "figure it out" when it comes to figuring out janky networks across countries.

You can help improve deployment, security, and other devops-to-production flows

Bonus:

  • you've shipped Laravel apps in the past
  • have experience with banking / accounting apps
  • have knowledge of security
  • data networking and/or cell network experience

About the Product

New versions of the software are being built with a modern Laravel PHP stack, chosen in part because of familiarity with PHP and related technologies by the local ecosystem

There are engagements with credit cooperatives of sizes varying from 300 to 300,000 end users. Working with product leads, large client requirements need to be analyzed and prioritized

Several junior developers have been hired and trained. Continued training, mentoring, and hiring will need to be done to keep growing the team.
