Summary/Objective
The Manager, Software Architecture leads a team of Software Architects while remaining deeply hands-on in architectural work. This role carries a dual mandate: 50% people management and professional development, and 50% direct architectural contribution. The successful candidate combines strong technical vision with the ability to grow, coach, and retain top architectural talent. They partner with development leadership to ensure architectural consistency, quality, and innovation across isolved's platform.
People Management & Professional Development (50%)
- Directly manage a team of Software Architects, including hiring, onboarding, performance reviews, compensation planning, and career development
- Conduct regular 1:1s focused on growth, blockers, and alignment with team and organizational goals
- Build and maintain individual development plans (IDPs) for each direct report, identifying skill gaps and growth opportunities
- Foster a culture of continuous learning through knowledge sharing, architecture forums, and mentorship
- Set clear expectations and hold the team accountable for architectural quality, collaboration, and delivery outcomes
- Manage capacity and workload distribution, ensuring architects are effectively partnered with development teams
- Advocate for the architecture team's needs in leadership discussions and cross-functional planning
- Drive retention and engagement through meaningful work assignment, recognition, and professional growth pathways
Architectural Contributions (50%)
- Provide architectural guidance to multiple development teams as they drive projects from inception to production deployment with a strong focus on performance and quality
- Establish, document, and implement the guidance and best practices that make up isolved's coding standards and architectural patterns
- Perform code and design reviews to ensure high quality standards and architectural consistency
- Review and identify performance issues; provide direction and strategies for resolving them
- Assist in tracking down production issues and responding to support cases
- Evaluate and recommend technologies, frameworks, and patterns that advance the platform's scalability, reliability, and maintainability
- Contribute to architectural decision records (ADRs) and ensure decisions are well-documented and communicated
- Partner with Director-level leadership on architectural vision, roadmap, and standards governance
Job Complexity
Operates at the intersection of technical leadership and people management. Uses deep architectural expertise to guide resolution of critical technical issues and broad design decisions while simultaneously building and developing a high-performing team. Balances strategic architectural direction with the day-to-day coaching and support that enables architects to do their best work. Significant organizational influence and cross-functional coordination are expected at this level.
Interaction
Works across engineering leadership, product management, and development teams on issues that impact platform architecture, technical strategy, and team effectiveness. Serves as a key voice in architectural governance and represents the architecture team in cross-functional planning and decision-making.
Supervision
Reports to the Director of Application Architecture. Exercises wide latitude in determining team objectives, architectural approaches, and individual development strategies. Directly supervises Software Architects.
Experience
Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related software engineering experience with a Bachelor's degree, plus demonstrated management and leadership experience including:
- 2+ years of direct people management with full-cycle responsibility (hiring, performance reviews, compensation, terminations)
- Track record of developing technical talent through individual development plans, mentorship, and career pathing
- Experience managing through organizational change such as team restructures, reorgs, or rapid growth
- 2+ years of architectural leadership, including setting technical direction and driving adoption across multiple teams
- Experience facilitating difficult conversations, managing underperformance, and building accountability within a team
- Demonstrated ability to advocate for team needs and represent technical perspectives to senior leadership
Minimum Qualifications
- 7+ years developing web applications
- 3+ years developing cloud-native applications
- 1+ years of direct people management or formal team lead experience
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and grow technical talent
- Ability to work independently to research and solve complex problems
