Engineering Manager – Software Development
About the Team and Role
At eBay, we connect millions of buyers and sellers around the world through technology. We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a high-performing team of engineers building scalable, reliable, and customer-focused experiences for one of the world’s largest online marketplaces.
In this role, you’ll combine people leadership, technical depth, and execution excellence. You’ll develop engineering talent, guide architecture and technical decisions, and partner closely with Product, Design, and other engineering teams to deliver high-quality solutions at global scale.
We’re looking for a leader who stays close to technology, creates clarity in complex environments, and builds a culture of ownership, collaboration, engineering excellence, and continuous learning.
What You’ll Do
Lead & Develop Engineers: Manage, coach, and grow a team of software engineers, creating an inclusive and high-performing engineering culture.
Drive Technical Direction: Partner with senior engineers to guide architecture and design of scalable, distributed, and resilient systems.
Own End-to-End Delivery: Lead execution across the complete software lifecycle—from design and development to testing, deployment, operations, and continuous improvement.
Build at Scale: Guide the development of high-volume services, APIs, and applications that support eBay’s global marketplace.
Champion Engineering Excellence: Establish strong practices around code quality, automated testing, security, performance, observability, and reliability.
Drive Operational Excellence: Ensure production readiness, effective monitoring, CI/CD automation, and strong operational ownership of services.
Partner Cross-Functionally: Work closely with Product, Design, Platform, and other engineering teams to translate business priorities into clear technical plans and outcomes.
Improve Developer Productivity: Identify opportunities to simplify engineering workflows, increase automation, and improve development and delivery velocity.
Drive Innovation: Encourage thoughtful adoption of emerging technologies, including AI-assisted engineering, cloud-native technologies, and modern development practices.
Build for the Future: Hire strong talent, develop future technical leaders, and help evolve the team and its capabilities as eBay grows.
What You’ll Bring
12+ years of software engineering experience, with strong foundations in building large-scale applications and distributed systems.
5+ years of engineering management experience, with a track record of building, leading, and developing high-performing engineering teams.
Strong technical background in Java, Python, Node.js, or similar modern programming languages.
Experience designing and delivering microservices, REST APIs, distributed systems, and event-driven architectures.
Experience with modern infrastructure and engineering technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, cloud platforms, relational/NoSQL databases, and observability tools.
Strong understanding of system design, scalability, reliability, performance, security, and operational excellence.
Experience leading teams with end-to-end ownership of the software they build and operate.
Ability to balance technical strategy, people leadership, delivery commitments, and long-term engineering investments.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to influence across engineering, product, and business organizations.
Experience working effectively with globally distributed teams.
Nice to Have
Experience with high-scale commerce, payments, financial services, or transaction-heavy platforms.
Experience applying AI/ML or AI-assisted development tools to improve products or engineering productivity.
Experience with modern frontend or mobile technologies such as React, iOS, or Android.
Contributions to open-source technologies or the broader engineering community.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
