Mechanical Design Engineer
Janicki Industries is an innovative, family-owned aerospace company located at the foot of the Cascades. We focus on engineering and manufacturing complex projects for companies in the aerospace, defense, and space industries. We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our growing team.
This position is located on-site in Sedro-Woolley, Washington State.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Janicki Industries is seeking Mechanical Design Engineers to design and deliver advanced machines and automated manufacturing systems. This role is ideal for hands-on engineers who want to see their designs realized — from concept to implementation. You will work on complex, high-precision equipment including large-scale machine tools. Engineers in this role are deeply involved in both technical design and project execution, working closely with machinists, technicians, controls engineers, and project stakeholders.
At Janicki, a Mechanical Engineer designs, develops, and analyzes all aspects of mechanical systems. They apply engineering principles to solve complex problems including the design of machines, robotics, hydraulic and pneumatic systems etc. Engineers are involved in the fabrication, assembly, installation, operation, and repair of mechanical products. Projects will include large-scale machine tools (i.e. our 5-axis mills), robotic systems, and other equipment with integral electronics and controls.
The following essential job functions are performed as a Mechanical Engineer:
- Assists in the design and development of mechanical systems, primarily in the broad area of manufacturing automation
- Helps Janicki Industries create machines for composite and metal manufacturing that will make it possible to produce tooling that is not possible today
- Uses broad knowledge of machines and mechanical components along with well-rounded technical knowledge to deliver production-ready, highly reliable, highly automated equipment
- Supports the implementation and installation of new CNC machines, including site preparation, rigging/foundation requirements, utility hookups, and mechanical integration with existing production lines
- Coordinates with equipment manufacturers, vendors, and internal teams during CNC machine installation, startup, and commissioning to ensure machines meet performance and reliability requirements
- Assists in developing installation plans, timelines, and acceptance criteria for new CNC equipment, including run-off and validation testing prior to full production release
- Troubleshoots mechanical and integration issues during CNC machine installation and early production, working hands-on with technicians and machinists to resolve issues quickly
- Manages multiple simultaneous projects from preliminary design through detail engineering and stress analysis, manufacturing, assembly, and commissioning in production
- Uses hands-on troubleshooting in a live production environment to learn about how designs can be improved
- The incumbent must work well under pressure, meeting and completing multiple deadlines. The incumbent shall, at all times, demonstrate cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors
- Being at work on time and maintaining good attendance is a condition of employment and is an essential function of your job
QUALIFICATIONS
- Due to our ITAR and EAR regulations, applicants must be a US Citizen or of Legal Permanent Resident Status as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b (a) (3).
- This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Secret Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship Required). Janicki will assist with gaining this access once employed. Special Access Program or other Government Access Requirements are mandatory for this position and requires candidate agreed to enter a Continuous Evaluation program.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Required
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering/engineering technology, or a similar field
- Must have at least 6 years of professional experience designing large mechanical systems with automation components (i.e. motors, gear boxes, bearings, servo systems, etc.)
- Must have at least 6 years’ experience using either NX or CATIA
- Must be able to prioritize and execute tasks in a dynamic environment
- Must have experience managing large assembly models and drawings, outsourcing manufacturing, and managing assembly of components
- Must be able to work well in an integrated, multidisciplinary collaborative, team environment including daily interactions with technicians, millwrights, machinists, engineers, and managers
- Must be self-motivated and self-directed with attention to detail
- Must have effective verbal and written communication skills in the English language
- Minimum requirement for all positions is a high school diploma or GED
- Must have effective verbal and written communication skills in the English language
- Must be willing to obtain a government issued security clearance
Preferred
- Experience with machine design, manufacturing automation, or robotics
- Skilled in Stress Analysis, Hydraulics, and Pneumatics
- Experienced in designing large assembly models and drawings in CAD
- Experienced with managing outsourced manufacturing
- Hands-on experience supporting assembly, installation, or commissioning machinery
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- Salary range for this role is between $83,000 - $148,000 per year, plus discretionary bonus, 401(k) matching, vacation, and health benefits. Employees can also receive additional pay for off shifts. The range provided is Janicki’s estimate of the base compensation for this role. Actual amount offered will be based on job-related and non-discriminatory factors such as experience, location, education, training, skills, and abilities
