Due to the expansion of our team, we are currently recruiting for a Mechanical Fitter Supervisor to work within our multi-disciplinary teams. This is a great opportunity for enthusiastic individuals who fit in with our company values and are keen to develop in a forward-thinking organisation.

Role Purpose

To supervise and lead a team of mechanical fitters and technicians responsible for the installation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of mechanical plant and equipment within water and wastewater treatment facilities. The Mechanical Fitter Supervisor ensures work is carried out safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory and company standards, supporting optimum asset performance and reliability

Key Responsibilities

Supervision & Leadership

  • Lead, coordinate, and oversee daily activities of mechanical fitters and contractors.

  • Allocate tasks, monitor progress, and ensure quality workmanship.

  • Provide technical guidance and hands-on support where required.

  • Conduct toolbox talks, coaching, and competency assessments.

Mechanical Maintenance & Inspection

  • Oversee the mechanical maintenance of pumps, valves, gearboxes, screens, sludge handling equipment, chemical dosing systems, and associated plant.

  • Ensure planned preventative maintenance (PPM) tasks are completed on schedule.

  • Diagnose faults and support reactive maintenance activities.

  • Ensure accurate completion of maintenance records, work orders, and asset data.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Enforce safe working practices and ensure compliance with water industry regulations, including confined spaces, permit-to-work systems, and MEICA standards.

  • Conduct safety inspections, risk assessments, and incident reporting.

  • Ensure mechanical work complies with statutory requirements such as LOLER, PUWER, and Pressure Systems Safety Regulations.

Asset Management & Continuous Improvement

  • Support asset condition assessments and recommend repair, replacement, or improvement works.

  • Contribute to reliability-centred maintenance and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Liaise with engineering, operations, and projects teams to support upgrades and new installations.

Coordination & Communication

  • Plan and coordinate resources, materials, and tools to deliver planned and reactive work efficiently.

  • Communicate with internal stakeholders, suppliers, and contractors.

  • Prepare reports on team performance, maintenance KPIs, and asset condition.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Recognised mechanical engineering qualification (e.g., NVQ Level 3 / City & Guilds, apprenticeship).

  • Proven experience as a Mechanical Fitter or Technician within the water, wastewater, utilities, or heavy industrial sector.

  • Previous supervisory or team-leading experience.

  • Strong knowledge of pumps, valves, rotating machinery, hydraulics, pipework, and mechanical systems found in water treatment environments.

  • Understanding of PPM systems and maintenance planning.

  • Full UK driving licence.

Desirable Qualifications

  • IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent.

  • Confined Space Entry certification.

  • Water industry safety training (e.g., SHEA Water).

  • MEICA knowledge or multi-skilled background.

Working Conditions

  • Based at treatment works, pumping stations, or regional sites.

  • Includes site visits, climbing ladders, confined space areas (with training).

  • Participation in standby/rota call-out system may be required.

  • Outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
