Operations Manager
Purpose of Position:
The Operations Manager plays a vital leadership role in the overall success and operational efficiency of the Clarksville Grade & Drain Division. Reporting directly to the Division Manager, this position oversees daily field and administrative operations with a heavy focus on safety, cost control, personnel development, and maximizing equipment rental utilization. The ideal candidate will foster a team-oriented culture, streamline project workflows, build strong customer relationships, and ensure all work meets or exceeds company standards for quality and profitability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Safety Leadership: Promote and drive a zero-incident safety culture; ensure all policies are communicated, monitored, and updated. Oversee timely incident reporting, thorough investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action implementations while keeping area RIR below industry standards.
- Operational & Financial Oversight: Review and approve daily invoices, timecards, and job costs. Continuously monitor monthly financial statements, update Work in Progress (WIP) reports, and lead cost/progress reviews with Project Managers, Estimators, and Superintendents.
- Equipment Optimization: Continuously evaluate, monitor, and suggest operational means and methods to optimize the utilization of rental equipment across projects.
- Communication & Team Building: Conduct daily field and office touchpoints and lead weekly scheduling meetings. Maintain regular, direct communication with major clients and foster a collaborative team environment across field and office personnel.
- Estimating & Project Execution: Assist with bid reviews, pre-construction planning, project scheduling, and resource allocation to guarantee projects finish safely, on time, and within budget.
- Quality Control & Process Improvement: Ensure field teams receive project plans and specifications well in advance to minimize rework. Proactively identify process improvements in pre-bid analysis, job time management, and field execution.
- Personnel Development & Retention: Partner with HR to mentor, retain, and develop team members through annual training opportunities and promotion-from-within pathways.
- Community & Industry Involvement: Represent the company positively by participating in local career fairs, industry associations, and community outreach initiatives.
Requirements:
- A minimum of ten (10) years of operational experience with thorough knowledge of estimating, project management, and civil/field operations.
- Proven supervisory experience with strong leadership, coaching, and problem-solving capabilities.
- Proficiency in HCSS, Microsoft Windows, MS Office (especially Excel and Word), and Google Workspace.
- Strong ability to read, analyze, and interpret construction plans, specs, legal documents, and technical reports.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to interact effectively with all levels of field and management staff.
- Ability to deal with complex variables and adapt to changing site conditions and operational schedules.
- Physical Demands: Ability to perform field/office duties, including sitting, standing, walking project sites, stooping, kneeling, and occasionally lifting up to 50 lbs.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or equivalent related work experience.
