Senior Application Design Engineer
About the role
We are seeking a senior application design engineer with strong expertise in protection & control systems and Schneider Electric protection relays to join our engineering team.
The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, configuring, testing, and commissioning protection and automation solutions for MV, HV, and EHV substations across utility, industrial, and infrastructure projects. The role requires hands-on experience with IEC 61850, substation automation systems (SAS), protection coordination, and Schneider Electric relay technologies including MiCOM, Sepam, Vamp, and PowerLogic.
Key responsibilities
- Design protection, control, metering, and SAS panels for MV, HV, and EHV substations.
- Prepare engineering deliverables including:
Single line diagrams (SLD)
Protection & control schematics
Wiring diagrams
Connection diagrams
Terminal plans
Bill of materials (BOM)
Cable schedules - Configure, test, and commission Schneider Electric protection relays.
- Develop relay logic, protection settings, event records, and disturbance analysis.
- Prepare and maintain IEC 61850 engineering files including CID and SCL files.
- Perform protection studies including:
Protection coordination
CT/VT sizing
Fault analysis
Relay settings calculations - Develop electrical drawings using EPLAN.
- Integrate protection and automation systems using IEC 61850, Modbus TCP/IP, and Modbus RTU.
- Support FAT, SAT, commissioning activities, troubleshooting, and system modifications.
- Coordinate with project, manufacturing, procurement, and engineering teams to ensure successful project delivery.
- Participate in technical discussions with customers, consultants, utilities, and Schneider Electric factories.
Requirements
Education
Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.
Experience
Minimum 3 years of experience in protection & control, secondary design, or substation automation projects.
Experience in MV, HV, and EHV substations.
Technical skills
Hands-on experience with Schneider Electric protection relays:
MiCOM
Sepam
Vamp
PowerLogic
Strong knowledge of protection schemes including:
Feeder protection
Transformer differential protection
Busbar protection
Distance protection
Bus coupler protection
Overcurrent & earth fault protection
Practical experience with IEC 61850 engineering and IED configuration.
Experience with substation automation systems (SAS).
Strong knowledge of CT/VT calculations and protection coordination studies.
Experience using EPLAN.
Knowledge of Modbus TCP/IP and Modbus RTU communication protocols.
Good command of English.
Preferred qualifications
Experience with Schneider Electric EcoStruxure Power Automation System.
Experience in utility, transmission, renewable energy, or EPC projects.
Experience using OMICRON relay testing equipment.
Knowledge of IEC 60255, IEC 61850, and utility protection standards.
Master's degree in electrical engineering is an advantage.
