Senior Backend Engineer

Senior Software Engineers at Digitail need to

• Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams to ensure solutions meet business requirements and align with company objectives.

• Contribute in the entire product development lifecycle, from design and development to deployment and maintenance of new and existing features.

• Design and implement AI-focused workflows, robust, scalable RESTful APIs.

• Work closely with other engineers to integrate features, manage dependencies, and solve technical challenges.

• Optimize application performance for production-scale environments.

• Uphold and promote engineering best practices through code reviews, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement.

• Continuously learn and explore new technologies, identifying opportunities to enhance our systems.

Who we’re looking for

• You care about what we build and why we do it. You care about the people using what you build. Ours are vets and we’re helping them see 2x the patients AND get home on time!

• You have spent years building and owning backend systems at real scale and in organizations that grew.

• You have opinions about how to keep complex systems clean as they grow.

• You have worked on something with real availability requirements, where being down really hurts.

• You can look at a slow, complex part of a live system, remain calm and define a few hypotheses about what’s wrong; and you can explain your reasoning.

• Most of our backend is PHP and Laravel. If you have not worked in it, that is fine. We care more about how you think about systems than which tech you have used. Strong engineers pick up our stack quickly; we have your back.

The stack

• PHP and Laravel, organised into domains (modulith).

• AWS, Kubernetes, with infrastructure as code.

• Every pull request ships with tests.

What success looks like in your first year

• You own a meaningful part of the backend outright. When something related needs a decision, people come to you.

• Engineers and agents write better code because of your reviews, and the less experienced ones are faster after working with you.

• You have led one larger piece of rework end to end: you scoped it, sequenced it and shipped it without a maintenance window.

• You can point to engineering practices now agreed and written down instead of repeatedly finding them in review comments.

• You can point to something you automated that the team used to catch by hand, or miss entirely.
