Senior Cloud Engineer
Let's Write Africa's Story Together!
Old Mutual is a firm believer in the African opportunity and our diverse talent reflects this.
Job Description
The Senior Cloud Engineer is responsible for managing and overseeing Old Mutual's cloud infrastructure.Day-to-day tasks include designing, implementing, and maintaining cloud-based technologies,
optimizing cloud usage and performance, and ensuring the security and availability of the cloud environment.
You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to provide technical expertise,
coaching, and support for cloud-related initiatives.
Cloud Architecture & Engineering Standards
Implement cloud architecture standards and principles across the enterprise ecosystem.
Define and enforce cloud engineering patterns and standards for multi-cloud deployments.
Assess the maturity of squad-level cloud adoption and develop formal plans to improve technical proficiency.
Manage centralized cloud platforms (e.g. EKS, ECS, AKS, Container Apps).
Cloud Networking
Manage networking of cloud environments, including VPC/VNet design and inter-cloud connectivity.
Administer DNS resolution strategies and IP address management across cloud environments.
Support hybrid connectivity solutions and ensure network security policies are applied consistently.
Automation & Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
Develop automation systems to enable speed and scale while eliminating manual processes within the cloud environment.
Standardize the use of Infrastructure as Code for all infrastructure primitives.
Integrate infrastructure automation into CI/CD pipelines.
Service Evaluation & Procurement
Identify and evaluate PaaS and SaaS services for suitability within the Old Mutual ecosystem.
Collaborate with Cloud Architecture and Security to define usage standards and self-service capabilities for new services.
Liaise with vendors to drive the selection and procurement of cloud-enabling technologies.
FinOps & Cost Engineering
Design and implement cost-optimised architectures from the outset — right-sizing, reserved/committed use, and spot/preemptible compute strategies are engineering decisions, not afterthoughts.
Automate cost governance through policy-as-code and budget enforcement mechanisms (e.g. AWS SCPs, Azure Policy, GCP Organization Policies) to prevent cost overruns by default.
Build tagging and resource attribution standards into IaC modules and CI/CD pipelines to ensure accurate cost allocation across teams, products, and environments.
Engineer automated alerting and anomaly detection for spend thresholds and unexpected resource provisioning.
Collaborate with Cloud Operations on continuous rightsizing recommendations, waste identification, and scheduled resource lifecycle automation (e.g. start/stop, auto-scaling, TTL policies).
Contribute to monthly and quarterly cloud spend reviews, providing engineering context on cost drivers and remediation options.
Evaluate architectural patterns with total cost of ownership (TCO) in mind, including data egress, inter-region transfer, and licensing implications.
Governance, Security & Compliance
Manage multi-cloud Landing Zones and ensure adherence to organizational governance frameworks.
Define and implement cloud-native security and compliance policies.
Ensure compliance with internal and regulatory standards across all cloud environments.
Monitoring & Operational Excellence
Define and implement monitoring, reporting, and alerting requirements for the cloud ecosystem.
Execute continuous improvement initiatives focusing on cost optimization, capacity management, and performance.
Manage infrastructure availability, resilience, and disaster recovery protocols.
Lead incident management and Tier-3 troubleshooting for cloud-related issues.
Minimum Requirements:
A numerate Bachelor's Degree (e.g. Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering) with minimum or equivalent technical qualification.
