We're partnering with a successful NZ tech consultancy specialising in modern data, integration, AI and cloud solutions. As its data practice continues to grow, the business is seeking an experienced Senior Data Engineer to design and deliver scalable data platforms across a range of client engagements.
This is a hands-on role combining senior data engineering capability with client engagement and technical leadership. You will take ownership of engineering delivery, contribute to solution design and support the development of junior and intermediate engineers.
You will work closely with clients, architects and delivery teams to build modern Databricks, Azure and Microsoft Fabric-based solutions that deliver meaningful business outcomes.

What You’ll Be Doing
- Design, build and optimise data pipelines across lakehouse and warehouse environments
- Develop data transformations supporting reporting, analytics and AI/ML use cases
- Deliver solutions using Databricks notebooks, workflows, Delta Live Tables and Lakeflow
- Write clean, reliable and maintainable Python and SQL code
- Implement automated testing, monitoring, data validation and performance optimisation
- Apply modern data modelling and Medallion Architecture principles
- Lead technical discussions and translate business requirements into engineering outcomes
- Collaborate with architects and delivery teams on solution design and delivery planning
- Communicate progress, risks and technical blockers to clients and stakeholders
- Conduct peer reviews and promote consistent engineering standards
- Mentor junior and intermediate engineers
- Contribute to internal frameworks, templates, documentation and delivery practices
- At least six years of professional data engineering experience
- Four or more years of hands-on Databricks experience
- Strong experience with Databricks notebooks, workflows and Delta Live Tables
- Advanced Python and SQL capability
- Experience delivering modern lakehouse, warehouse or cloud-native data platforms
- Exposure to Microsoft Fabric and Azure Data Platform technologies
- Understanding of Delta Lake, Medallion Architecture and scalable solution design
- Experience with data modelling for analytics workloads
- Strong Git, CI/CD and DevOps experience
- Experience implementing automated testing and data-quality frameworks
- Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills
- Experience mentoring engineers or providing technical leadership
- Relevant Databricks certifications or a demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development
