Senior Electrical Engineer – Substation Physical Design (Remote Option)

Summary

Leads physical design of 69–500 kV transmission and distribution substations, producing layouts, grounding plans, conduit schedules, bus and equipment drawings, and grounding analysis with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or Bentley Substation. Coordinates across engineering teams, checks NESC and IEEE compliance, and mentors engineers on safe, constructible designs.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead and perform physical design of high-voltage substations (69 kV – 500 kV) in transmission and distribution networks.
  • Create layout drawings, general arrangements, grounding plans, conduit/cable schedules, and equipment drawings using AutoCAD, MicroStation, or Bentley Substation.
  • Partner with protection & control (P&C) and civil/structural engineering teams to ensure high-quality, constructible designs, and schedule adherence.
  • Conduct grounding analysis, bus design, equipment configuration, and quality checks to support reliable and safe operation.
  • Review design packages in compliance with NESC, IEEE, and client standards.
  • Mentor and inspire early-career engineers, fostering technical growth and team collaboration — you’ll be a technical leader and a role model.
  • Support proposal efforts and provide input on project scoping, schedule, and cost estimating for new projects.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and an active PE license.
  • 8+ years of experience in substation physical design for utilities, EPCs, or consulting firms.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, MicroStation, and familiarity with Bentley Substation or other substation design tools.
  • Strong knowledge of high-voltage equipment layouts, grounding systems, and bus design.
  • Working understanding of relay coordination, control schemes, SCADA, and substation automation principles.
  • Excellent communication, project leadership, and mentoring skills with a strong eye for detail and quality.
  • A genuine passion for innovation and helping shape the next generation of substation engineers.

Compensation

Estimated salary range: $115,000 – $180,000, based on experience, qualifications, and PE status.
