Introduction to the Team:
Expedia Global Payments (EGP) is looking for top engineering talent to help drive the development of our payments platform, seamlessly roll out new payments methods, and to continuously raise the bar on our operational excellence and engineering practices. Our services are the nexus of a globally distributed system that spans many organizations. Our roadmap is deep and contains several innovative programs designed to make our services fault tolerant, reduce the cost of payment processing, and improve customer experience. This includes compensating for downstream services that are not in Expedia's control. We are also looking to use cloud computing (AWS) to further solidify our infrastructure. This opportunity presents you with great technical challenges and the ability to have a tremendous business impact. We do this accurately and at scale, processing over $100 billion payments in 60+ currencies in over 155 countries every year across diverse payment options.

What you'll do:

  • Design and build end-to-end backend solutions for Payments, that are scalable, resilient, and performant.

  • Own and evolve core payment services and workflows, including payment session lifecycle, payment-method orchestration, and downstream service integrations.

  • Build and enhance backend APIs and service interfaces using Kotlin/Java and modern service frameworks, with strong emphasis on clean contracts, backward compatibility, and operational reliability.

  • Develop and support GraphQL, gRPC, and REST-based integrations that power payment experiences across multiple Expedia Group brands and checkout surfaces.

  • Contribute to distributed system design for high-volume, multi-tenant, 24x7 payment flows, balancing latency, availability, security, and maintainability.

  • Build robust integrations with payment providers, internal platforms, and shared infrastructure while ensuring fault tolerance and graceful degradation.

  • Take strong ownership of production systems, including monitoring, alerting, on-call participation, incident response, and root cause resolution.

  • Build and enhance observability through logs, metrics, traces, dashboards, and operational playbooks to proactively detect and prevent issues.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve production issues with urgency, minimizing customer, partner, and business impact in high-transaction environments.

  • Continuously improve system reliability, deployment safety, and engineering effectiveness through CI/CD, rollback strategies, feature flags, test automation, and performance tuning.

  • Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, frontend engineers, partner teams, and platform teams to deliver reliable, intuitive, and scalable payment capabilities.

  • Mentor junior engineers and drive engineering best practices across backend design, coding standards, testing, operational excellence, and incident management.

  • Lead technical discussions, code reviews, architecture reviews, and design decisions across the team and broader payments ecosystem.

  • Influence cross-functional delivery and act as a subject matter expert for backend payment architecture, scalability, and service reliability.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 6+ years of professional software development experience with a strong focus on backend engineering using Java in production environments.

  • Hands-on experience designing and implementing backend services, including system design (with low-level design), API contracts, and data modeling for RDBMS-backed applications.

  • Practical exposure to at least one major cloud platform (preferably AWS) and associated services for deploying, running, and monitoring backend services at scale.

  • Demonstrated responsibility for owning and supporting backend components in production, including working with monitoring, logging, and alerting systems such as Datadog or Splunk.

  • Familiarity with AI-driven systems, tools, or workflows and applying AI/ML concepts to real world products in the context of backend service development, testing, or operations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Deep expertise in Java-based microservice development using frameworks such as Spring Boot, including experience modernizing legacy or monolithic systems into service-oriented architectures.

  • Strong RDBMS experience that goes beyond basic CRUD usage, including working with stored procedures, performance tuning, and systematically migrating database-resident logic into application services.

  • Experience building and operating large-scale, business-critical backend systems in a cloud environment (such as AWS), with a track record of using observability tooling to drive operational excellence and reliability.

  • Demonstrated use of AI-augmented development or operations (for example, code-generation assistants, intelligent alerting, or anomaly detection) and the ability to safely integrate AI/ML‑enabled solutions into backend services to improve developer productivity, system stability, or customer outcomes.
