Software Engineer-Test Automation & Embedded Software

At Spectrum Control, most departments operate on a 4-day, 10-hour work schedule in exchange for a 3-day weekend. We offer competitive wages and PTO, plus our benefits begin on day 1 of employment. Come join a workforce where we put you first!

Job Summary: Spectrum Control designs and manufactures high-performance RF, microwave, and power electronics that help keep mission-critical aerospace and defense systems safe, connected, and performing at their best.

As a Software Engineer – Test Automation & Embedded Software, you will develop the software that brings our products to life—from programming intelligent embedded controllers and developing software interfaces to building automated test systems that verify product performance before shipment.

Your code will serve as a critical bridge between our hardware and our customers' systems. You will work side by side with electrical, RF, manufacturing, and other software engineers, seeing your software interact with real hardware throughout the development and production lifecycle.

Spectrum Control is actively expanding the use of artificial intelligence across our engineering and manufacturing operations. In this role, you will have access to modern AI-assisted development tools and opportunities to help shape how AI is applied to software development, engineering workflows, test automation, and manufacturing. This is an opportunity to build deep expertise in hardware-facing software while working hands-on with technologies that are transforming the way engineering teams develop, test, and deliver products.

Compensation Range: The expected compensation range for this position is $105,000 - $145,000 annually.

Essential Job Functions

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain embedded product software and automated functional test systems, primarily using C/C++ and object-oriented design principles.
  • Develop software for intelligent embedded controllers that enable product functionality and monitor electrical and environmental operating conditions.
  • Design and implement automated instrument-control software using NI VISA, IVI driver standards, and related technologies.
  • Develop modular, reusable, maintainable, and well-documented software using Git-based version control and established software engineering practices.
  • Collaborate with electrical, RF, manufacturing, systems, and other software engineers to define functional requirements and develop solutions based on hardware behavior, product requirements, and customer specifications.
  • Integrate products and automated test systems using standard communication interfaces, including Ethernet, USB, Serial, and GPIB.
  • Develop and support networked applications and test environments utilizing technologies such as UDP-based communications and NTP time synchronization.
  • Troubleshoot software, hardware, instrumentation, and system-integration issues throughout product development and manufacturing.
  • Develop software interfaces and tools that enable users to configure, monitor, test, and interact with products and test systems.
  • Prepare clear technical documentation, test results, and reports, and communicate technical information effectively to engineering teams, production personnel, and customers.
  • Provide technical support, training, and troubleshooting assistance for internally developed software and automated test systems.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance software quality, engineering efficiency, test capability, and manufacturing productivity.
  • Leverage AI-assisted development tools and emerging technologies, where appropriate, to improve software development, testing, documentation, and engineering workflows.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • 2+ years of professional experience in embedded software development, automated test systems development, hardware-facing software, or closely related work.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ and object-oriented software design.
  • Working knowledge of Python and Linux environments.
  • Experience with Git or similar version-control systems.
  • Strong software debugging, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot software interactions with hardware, instrumentation, and communication interfaces.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively in a cross-functional engineering environment.
  • Ability to access export-controlled technical data in accordance with applicable U.S. export control regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience developing automated test systems using NI VISA, IVI drivers, or similar instrument-control frameworks.
  • Experience programming embedded or intelligent controllers for hardware-based products.
  • Experience with sensor monitoring, including electrical and environmental parameters.
  • Familiarity with laboratory and production communication interfaces, including GPIB, Serial, USB, and Ethernet.
  • Experience with UDP-based communication protocols and NTP time synchronization.
  • Exposure to RF, microwave, or power electronics and associated test equipment.
  • Experience developing or supporting software within manufacturing, production test, or engineering laboratory environments.
  • Experience developing user interfaces or software tools for hardware configuration, monitoring, or test applications.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted software development tools and an interest in applying AI to engineering, automation, and manufacturing workflows.

Work Environment

  • This role may be based at one of Spectrum Control’s facilities in Fairview, PA; Philadelphia, PA; Ann Arbor, MI; or Marlborough, MA. Candidates should be located within a reasonable commuting distance of one of these locations.
  • The role involves regular hands-on interaction with engineering hardware, laboratory equipment, automated test systems, and production environments.
